#2 The National Trust is a wonderful organization.

When comparing American and British comedy, comedian Ricky Gervais believes the latter is more "down the line."

Gervais, who co-wrote, co-produced, and acted in the successful BBC comedy The Office for two years before it was adapted for an eight-season run in the United States, feels that Americans don't hide their aspirations and anxieties.

"They encourage ambition and publicly congratulate achievement." He argues in Time Magazine that "British people are more at ease with life's losers." "We champion the underdog until it is no longer underdog." We enjoy knocking authority down a notch or two. Simply for the sake of it. Whether they mean it or not, Americans say "have a great day." This is something that British people are afraid to utter. We tell ourselves it's because we don't want to come off as insincere, but I believe it's the reverse. We don't want to make any premature celebrations. Every turn leads to failure and disappointment. Our upbringing is to blame for this. Americans are raised to think that they have the potential to become the future president of the United States. 'It won't happen for you,' the British are informed.

These distinctions, according to Gervais, may be seen in anything from the news to everyday interactions. "It's common knowledge in the United Kingdom that Americans don't understand irony. Of course, this is not the case. However, it is true that they do not utilize it on a regular basis. It appears in sharper comedy, but Americans do not use it as much as Brits in social situations. In daily conversation, we employ it as freely as we do prepositions. We make fun of our buddies. Sarcasm is both a shelter and a weapon for us. We try to avoid being sincere until it's really essential. Basically, we take the crap out of those we like or don't like ruthlessly. As well as ourselves. This is a critical point. Our bravado and swagger are laced with self-deprecation in equal measure. This is our permission to distribute it."

You're right if you believe this might come across as obnoxious at times. Only if the receivers aren't familiar to it will it work. It isn't the case in reality. It's simply play fighting, as Gervais puts it. "If we like you, it's nearly a sign of affection; if we don't, it's almost a sign of ego busting. All you have to do now is figure out which one it is."
